Whisper reading is an effective technique that allows students to reread an entire text to build fluency. In this activity, each student whisper reads the text at his or her own speed. While the students whisper read, the teacher “listens in” on individual students. A “reading telephone” made from PVC pipe allows students to reread without the distraction of hearing other readers. This strategy accommodates students who read at various speeds without wasting valuable small-group instructional time.
